ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC)- Genesee County will soon use GPS tracking devices to track county owned vehicles. To see how this might play out, they can look right next door to Monroe County which has been using GPS systems on county vehicles for the past 10 years.
Monroe County has 38 vehicles equipped with the Verizon Network Fleet GPS tracking device. The GPS’ are a $12,000 a year investment by the county. The county spends 25-dollars a month for each device.
Michael Garland, the Director for Environmental Services for the county said more county vehicles could be GPS equipped in the future.
“What it can do is it can provide fleet managers with vehicle diagnostics and can alert drivers when preventative maintenance is required,” Garland said. “It can assist the ability to manage crews during wet weather events or emergency scenarios so we know where our assets are.”
Genesee County will soon put GPS systems in 38 county cars costing $14,000 for 2015.
Jay Gsell, the County Manager for Genesee County said the cost is $29.99 per vehicle per month.
“We give them the privileged of operating and using our vehicles,” Gsell said. “They understand this comes with the package. We pay the cost, we don’t ask them to incur any expense and it’s a privileged for them to use our vehicles versus driving their own and getting mileage reimbursement.”
Two weeks ago in Monroe County, County Communication Officer Justin Feasel’s wife Meghan Feasel was charged with a DWI with Feasel in the car. It’s not clear if Feasel was driving a county car with a GPS.
Monroe county started using GPS tracking devices 10 years ago to help Rochester Institute of Technology. The college was evaluating ethanol use in cars and the county provided the test bed of vehicles.
