How to Install Your OBD-II Plug-In GPS Tracker

Installing your OBD-II plug-in GPS tracker takes just a few steps. This guide walks you through everything from unboxing to your first connection.

The tracker connects through your vehicle’s OBD port, sits tucked behind the dashboard, and leaves you with a working OBD port when you’re done.

What Comes in the Package:

Start by unboxing the device and adapters. Inside the package you’ll find:

  • The rectangular GPS tracker
  • The OBD adapter
  • The hardwired adapter

You will only use the OBD adapter or the hardwired adapter, not both. This guide covers installation with the OBD adapter.

Locating and Releasing the OBD Port:

The OBD port is located underneath the steering wheel column. Some vehicles require you to remove a panel under the dashboard to fully access it.

On either side of the OBD port, two small plastic clips hold it in place. Pop those clips out to release the port. Use caution during this step. Releasing the port shouldn’t take much force, and a small amount of pressure should be enough to free it.

Connecting the Tracker to Your Vehicle:

  • Plug the white connector into the tracker.
  • Plug the female end of the black adapter directly into the vehicle’s OBD port.

When everything is plugged in properly, blue and green LED lights will come on and start flashing.
Once the device has a good signal connection, the lights turn solid.

Setting Up the New OBD Port:

The male end of the adapter becomes your vehicle’s new OBD port. Take that end of the GPS cable, bring it behind the open socket, and push it through. It should fit securely and snap back into place, working just like the original port.

If it doesn’t feel secure, turn it around and insert it the other way.

Mounting the Tracker Behind the Dash:

Mount the tracker in the dashboard as high as possible, with the label side facing up. Use zip ties or double-sided Velcro to keep it from sliding around.

Tuck the remaining wires out of the way and replace the dashboard panel if you removed one.

Powering On and Getting Connected:

It can take up to 15 minutes for the device to power on after installation.

If the vehicle is parked in a garage, bring it outside and take it for a ten minute drive. This helps the tracker get its first connection faster.
