Two Zero Turn Mowers, Two Very Different Endings
The One That Got Away
One of our team came across a theft story online involving a stolen zero turn mower. The company name rang a bell, so he looked it up.
Turns out they had contacted us about two years ago. They talked through satellite tracking, were not quite sure about it, and put the decision on the back burner. Tracking is one of those line items that never feels urgent until the day it does. Then the mower was stolen.
Now the company is posting online asking for help, offering a reward, and hoping somebody spots it. That is the position you end up in when the only thing you have is a description and a date. This happens constantly, and it is exactly why we keep telling these stories.
The One That Came Back
Compare that to a customer who also had a zero turn mower stolen. The difference was that his machine was reporting its location the whole time. Tracking led straight to the mower, which had been loaded into the back of a box truck.
That created an unusual problem. Police could not simply open the truck. They needed a search warrant to get into the back of it. So the officer impounded the truck, got the warrant, opened it up, and found exactly what the tracker had been saying was in there the entire time.
Why the Second Case Worked
A thief loading stolen equipment into an enclosed vehicle has solved the visibility problem completely. Nobody driving past sees anything. From the outside, it is just a box truck.
Tracking does not care about any of that. The signal came from inside the truck, which gave police the probable cause needed to impound the vehicle and pursue the warrant.
Without it, that truck drives away and nobody ever knows what was in the back.
The Takeaway
Same equipment. Same crime. Two outcomes that could not be further apart, and the variable between them was a decision made months before the theft ever happened.
One company is offering a reward and hoping. The other got the mower back.
