How GPS and Track
Recovered a Generator
in Under an Hour
The Theft
Trailer theft is one of those crimes that usually ends the same way: an insurance claim, a police report that goes nowhere, and a piece of equipment you never see again. But a recent recovery shows how a live GPS tracker can flip that outcome completely.
On September 2, 2026, a wash trailer and a generator was stolen in Mattoon, Illinois. The moment it started rolling, GPS and Track flagged it, with a live pin dropping right onto the map for the customer to double check.
Watching It in Real Time
Instead of waiting for a police report to move through the system, the trailer’s owner could watch the theft unfold live. The dashboard showed the vehicle’s icon crawling along past local landmarks, with the map auto-refreshing every few seconds to show its current location
That kind of visibility is the whole point of GPS tracking: it turns “our trailer is gone” into “our trailer is right here, moving at this speed, headed in this direction.”
With all that information, the chase didn’t last long. Within a few hours, the tracker logged a Stop Movement event. With an exact address in hand instead of a vague “last seen” description, recovering the trailer became a matter of showing up, not searching a whole county.
Why It Worked
- Instant alerts. The system detected motion the second the trailer moved, not hours later when someone noticed it missing.
- Live location, not last-known location. Real-time pings meant the trailer could be followed turn by turn instead of relying on a single stale coordinate.
- A precise stop address. Once the trailer stopped moving, the platform pinpointed the exact street address — actionable information for recovery, not just a dot on a map.
Don’t Wait for It to Happen to Your Assets
Equipment theft isn’t going away, but the odds of getting your equipment back change dramatically when it can report its own location. A trailer, generator, or any other piece of towable equipment with a hidden GPS tracker stops being an easy target and starts being one that calls home the moment it’s taken.
